I am kind of pissed off about how skinny women are supposed to want to be. I don’t want to be skinny. Â It’s stupid. Â Calves should be bigger than ankles. I have small bones (super annoying!) and while I can carry 10-15 extra pounds without much trouble, by the time I’m carrying 40 more pounds I start to get the kinds of aches and pains that the elderly discuss with such gusto… now I kind of understand why. Â When your knee hurts and all you did was walk to the car you want to talk about it. Â It got to the point where I couldn’t pick up my daughter and that was unacceptable- with a new baby brother she needed to be picked up, too.

You devise a seriously ambitious plan on a strict time frame and then devote yourself to it. Â Here’s an example: I will run a marathon inÂ April. Â I will begin by running 2 miles this week, then three miles next week, then 4 and if I add one mile a week I will surely be up to 26.2 in just a few months! Surely I can run two miles tomorrow!

Â NOT the one who will say “I never thought of you as a runner” or “How are you gong to keep that up with 2 kids?” or “I wouldn’t run if a bear was chasing me.” Â Tell the person who says “That’s amazing! You inspire me to be a better person!Â Tell me every little thing about how it goes!’ Â If need be, tell me. Â I’ll root for you.

Remember how I said you will suck at this? Â How you will do it wrong? Â How you will want to quit? Â Some part of that will come to fruition in that first week. Â I ran in clothes that I already had and spent the first week running while pulling my yoga pants up because they were falling down. Â Awesome. Â But that’s cool, I’m learning. Â I went and got one pair of running pantsÂ and tried them out. Â Other things that made me look stupid in the beginning? I lost my car key once because I didn’t know what the little zipper compartment on the back of my pants were for (keys). Â I got a bad neck pain because I was wearing an arm band and I’m super sensitive to imbalance… now I have a spy-belt. The list goes on. Â At the end of the first week take stock. Â You now know TONS more about yourself as a runner– think through what you thought would get in your way and what unexpectedly got in your way. Â For example, I learned that Rocky was not helpful but having coffee already brewing downstairs was. Â Take that new information and devise a new plan for week 2. Â Repeat. Â Some weeks will feel easy, some weeks will feel unbelievably hard. We learn, we move on.
